Official description
Description
In 2022, staff invested in compostable items at events and worked on training a Green Team of community members and staff to help be zero waste goalies at events. Given the regional changes to compost collection that happened in early 2023, zero waste events shifted away from the disposable compostable options that were no longer accepted. Later in 2023, the Town piloted new sustainability measures at Chili Fest, including reusable mugs, edible and reusable utensils, and custom waste signage. We also piloted a number of circular approaches, including offering reusable cups at Ecotoberfest for the beer garden and supporting a costume exchange with over 200 Halloween costumes received from Superior residents. For 2024 events, staff are exploring continuing a circular approach by shifting from disposables to reusable options to prevent waste in the first place. For example, at the 2024 4th of July event, the Town explored the use of reusable r.cup system. We will also evaluate the remaining waste streams to continue to make improvements and work towards our zero waste commitment.
