Superior Streetlights: LED Upgrades

Superior LEDs the way to a safer and more efficient lighting

In partnership with Xcel Energy, the Town of Superior has been hard at work upgrading its street lights, having replaced over 400 of its older traditional streetlights (high-pressure sodium lamps) to new Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs. Recent technological innovations have made LEDs significantly more energy-efficient and improved both the quality and color of the lights. These energy efficiency savings not only significantly reduce the energy demands of lighting public spaces in Superior but also lower the costs with estimated savings of between 60-80%!

In addition to energy and financial savings, these new LEDs help us see better at night and reduce light pollution. Traditional sodium streetlights project a more orange color and do not allow the eyes to differentiate between the colors and shades of objects. The Town’s old sodium lights were omnidirectional (light was broadcast in all directions evenly) so much of the light went towards the sky, and this light pollution can disturb migratory birds, nocturnal animals, and insects as well as local stargazers. In contrast, LED lighting can be directed straight down, minimizing these light pollution issues and focusing lighting directly where intended. This precision makes our streets safer for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, especially during the long and dark winter nights. The Town’s new LED lights also last longer and are more durable than traditional street light bulbs. This means fewer repairs, replacements, and less frequent outages.

These upgrades are part of Superior’s broader commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, providing a shining example of how thoughtful actions can result in savings, improved service, and a better quality of life for all. Thanks to the Town’s Public Works & Utilities Department for lighting the way to a safer and more sustainable future!
